Nearshore Fishing

nearshore charter with Clearwater Fishing Company in Clearwater, Florida, you can generally expect a pretty active half-day on the Gulf rather than a long offshore run.

What to expect

  • Typical trip: You’ll head a few miles offshore to reefs, hard bottom, wrecks, or other productive structure. Nearshore trips are generally much shorter than deep-sea trips, so you spend more of your charter actually fishing. Trips are 6 – 8 hour nearshore trips
  • Fishing style: Expect mostly bottom fishing, with the possibility of trolling when mackerel or kingfish are around. You may move between several spots depending on the bite, current, water temperature and weather.
  • Experience level: You don’t need to be an experienced angler. The captain will typically bait hooks, explain the technique and help you land fish.

What you could catch

For Clearwater nearshore, the more realistic targets include:

  • Hogfish, porgies and sea bass — other possibilities around nearshore structure.
  • Snapper — including mangrove & lane snapper species depending on where you’re fishing.
  • Spanish mackerel — especially during their seasonal runs.
  • Kingfish — possible when they’re running.
  • Sharks and barracuda — possible bonus catches.
  • Occasionally cobia or other surprise species.

If your main goal is bringing home a bunch of grouper/snapper, I’d ask Clearwater Fishing Company exactly how far offshore their nearshore trip goes and what they’re currently targeting. Nearshore is not the same as a full-day offshore trip—larger reef fish generally become more accessible the farther

Also, Florida seasons, size limits and bag limits matter, so the captain will determine what you can legally keep on the day.

For October specifically, I’d ask the captain about grouper, snapper, Spanish mackerel and kingfish and whether the current conditions favor bottom fishing or trolling. The actual catch can change considerably with weather, tides and water temperature.

If you tell me how many people, the month/date, and whether you want action vs. fish to eat, I can tell you what I’d target on a Clearwater nearshore trip and whether I’d choose 4, 6, or 8 hours.
